George and Elise Shadow are figurative artists with Fine Art training. Their passionate commitment to classical art is reflected in their technical mastery of trompe l’oeil faux finishes, and the methods and historical styles of decorative painting of the Victorian, Art Deco, Arts and Crafts, Mid Century, and Modern periods. As hands-on professionals, they enjoy teamwork and collaboration with architects, designers, contractors, artists, and homeowners in the creation, conservation and restoration of beautiful spaces.
More trompe l’oeil decorative painting, fine wood graining, marbleizing, multi-layered faux stone illusions, gilding, and antiquing can be viewed at Art For Design Restoration Services website .
Marbleized fireplace in the McDonald Mansion, Santa Rosa, CA. The face of the surround is true marble. The mantel and apron, pilasters, plinths, corbels, and returns are faux marbre, painted and glazed to match the translucency and tone of the true marble.
In this Hillsborough Tuscan style residence, faux Pietra Griegia crown, casings and pediment work very well with the Venetian plaster walls and ceiling. Painting and sanding eleven layers created the visual depth and inclusions found in true gray limestone. Not seen are the Pietra Griegia base boards.

Winchester Mystery House, San Jose, CA. North Dining Room with a view into the South Dining Room. In both rooms Classic Art & Design, Inc. gilded the picture and dado rails with 23K gold leaf, glazed the lincrusta dado wainscot, frieze bands, ceiling bands, and mahogany wood grained the doors, windows, trims, and base boards.
Winchester Mystery House, North Dining Room. The chandelier plaster ceiling medallion has been decoratively painted and gilded with 23K gold leaf. The colors blend harmoniously with the design palette.
Presented with a matched set of artistically crafted ceramic teapots, George first cast a replacement resin spout from the remaining spout. The new spout had to have additional sculpting with epoxy resin putty. Once attached, both spouts joint seams were filled and carved level around the cylindrical forms. With appropriate pigments and media, and rendering with meticulous attention to texture and color, the restoration is complete.
Decorative Urn after Maxfield Parrish. Classic Art & Design, Inc. painted this halcyon garden scene mural on rigid substrate. Palette design is for a residence in Montecito, CA.
Faux Bronze Door. The entrance to this Mediterranean style residence in San Francisco is actually wooden. George faux bronzed the door with artist oils. The dummy steel straps are true steel, the rust is faux!
Alan Dragge commissioned Classic Art & Design, Inc. to create faux Shipwreck Beams for his home overlooking San Francisco Bay. The faux beam was sculpted over plywood cladded steel. True brass spads and true steel bolts with nuts and washers add to the illusion of Shipwreck Beams. The rust and verdigris are paint.

McDonald Mansion, Santa Rosa, CA. The dining room two pocket doors are 10’x10’. Over primed substrate Classic Art & Design, Inc. grained the natural antique cherry effect using a three pass method to create the translucent depth seen in natural wood grain.
