Doty Tile has been installing ceramic tilework since 1979. This small company specializes in jobs which demand finesse and craftsmanship. Much of this occurs while installing new tilework as part of the renovation of historic homes in the Berkeley and Oakland areas. Success in this realm requires executing designs which are creative and fresh, and also relate well to the existing architectural context.

The past decade has seen an outpouring of creative energy and production by many small studios and individual ceramic artists; Doty Tile is well suited to work with these handmade tiles. Also, natural stone and glass tiles can often be used effectively in combination with handmade art tiles. Two other areas of special interest are public art installations and historical restoration projects.

Doty Tile takes responsibility for the functional as well as aesthetic considerations of each project. (The greatest threats to tile work tend to come from water incursion and structural stress — but good engineering can provide a solution to virtually any set of conditions.) Many jobs utilize traditional full-thickness mortar beds. But exciting new materials enable us to meet certain challenges more effectively than would be possible using "Old School" methods alone.
